Easy DIY Lip Scrub Recipe

This coconut oil lip scrub is easy to make by using all-natural ingredients and essential oils that will naturally soothe dry and chapped lips during the winter months. These lip scrubs make a nice filler for your homemade gift baskets too.

Once the temperatures start dropping, it is normal that with the dry weather our lips are cracked and chapped. Sometimes, a chap stick does not work quick enough. But a lip scrub will work to exfoliate the lips gently.

COCONUT OIL LIP SCRUB

My husband and daughter love to go skiing during the season. When they go skiing, they are exposed to extreme cold weather and the lips are quickly cracked. Although, they carry a chap stick in their pockets, it gives some relief up in the mountains, but that is not enough. Therefore, a lip scrub will be an answer for extra care for chapped lips at home. Since the skin on the lip is sensitive, use an exfoliate that is especially meant for the lip area.

Most lip scrubs are made with a carrier oil, sugar or honey and essential oils. Hence, a lip scrub made with these ingredients is safe to use as a wash for the lips that will help to heal chapped skin.

These lip scrubs are also quick and easy to make. You can easily make it yourself and moreover all ingredients are in your kitchen cabinet.

Coconut oil lip scrub will help to keep your lips healthy and soft. The sugar will gently exfoliate the skin and remove flaky and dry skin.

The main ingredient here is coconut oil and sugar, the essential oils are optional. There are many benefits to using coconut oil for your skin care.

Coconut oil contains a certain kind of fat known as medium chain triglycerides which works differently than other types of saturated fat in the body. Therefore, when applied to the skin, coconut oil has a moisturizing effect.

HOW TO USE SUGAR LIP SCRUB

All you need to do is scoop out a little bit of your coconut oil lip scrub and then gently rub it over your lips. Let the scrub soak for a minute or so and then wash off with warm water. After you’ve scrubbed and wiped the dry skin away, you will see that your lips are now soft, hydrated, and refreshed.

Since, it will be a little messy and sticky, use the lip scrub above a sink or in the shower.

CAN YOU OMIT THE ESSENTIAL OILS ?

Yes, you can omit essential oils if you wish to. But adding some essential oils to these homemade lip scrubs will add many benefits due to the healing properties of essential oils.

Some of the essential oils are great for dry and chapped skin. But it is important to note that essential oils are very concentrated, therefore, you will only need a few drops of essential oils for the lip scrub. You can even reduce the dosage according to your wish.

Below are the properties of 2 of my favorite essential oils which I use for lip care most of the time.

LAVENDER

Lavender is one of my go to essential oils as you may have noted from my previous homemade skin care products. It is a very gentle essential oil, making it perfect for lip scrub. Lavender, has a gentle floral scent and will make your sugar scrub smell delicate and wonderful.

Essential oil of lavender has cleansing and purifying properties, supports the hydration of skin, reduce skin blemishes and irritations, and be really helpful for burns.  Lavender is one of my favorite oils. I also infuse the homegrown dried flowers into a carrier oil too and use for massages.

PEPPERMINT

Peppermint has a cooling effect on the lips and skin. The essential oils of peppermint are very soothing on dry and cracked skin, hence I use this oil for my lip balms too.

One caution, while using homemade peppermint skin products, wash your hands after applying. Because when the oil residue comes in close contact with your eyes, it can cause irritation and burn your eyes.

I also use peppermint oils in steamers for inhaling when I catch a cold.
