Homemade Eczema Ointment

Eczema and psoriasis is uncomfortable to live with and our family has a history of it. Therefore, I have second hand experience of this skin condition. To calm eczema and give some relief, I make this homemade eczema ointment with neem oil. This recipe is easy to make with very little effort and few ingredients that are easily available.

Skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis are probably two of the most irritating disturbances in our body. Both are genetic auto-immune skin conditions which results in flaky and inflamed skin. My daughter suffered with eczema since her infancy, but now it is under control.

Eczema is an external presentation of an internal problem. According to Ayurveda, eczema is caused by an imbalance of the doshas or humors. The balance of our doshas and humors are connected with our digestion. Therefore, fixing our digestion is the key to a healthy immune system.

With eczema, your skin is chronically inflamed. And your immune system becomes stressed that it eventually ends up attacking your skin. Outbreaks are often red and swollen and can appear on any part of the body. Chronic eczema can be painful too.

TREATING ECZEMA HOLISTICALLY

There is no fool proof treatment for eczema, but you can keep it under control by avoiding certain foods. That needs a separate post by itself, which I will share soon. In natural or holistic medicine, the goal is to uncover the root cause of disease and to treat it at its source. I have been mainly relying on holistic medicine for treating any ailment for my family. Ayurveda is my choice of medicine. Due to Ayurvedic treatment and diet, my daughter’s eczema is under control now.

Conventional or alopathic medicine focuses solely on applying steroid creams like cortisone to calm it. But, these steroids have long term side effects. So, I always used medicated oils to heal the skin externally. And accompanied it with herbal medicines for internal healing too. Because, oils are messy, I started to make Homemade Eczema ointment with neem oil. This works very well for us so far.

HOMEMADE ECZEMA OINTMENT

I love making my own homemade skin care recipes, because I want to avoid chemicals that comes with it.

This homemade eczema neem ointment recipe is an all natural oil based balm that can help soothe itchy and inflamed skin. One of the main active ingredients, is pure neem oil for this recipe. Although, we are going to be using only 5% compared to the other ingredients, it is potent enough. The oil from Neem is very potent to treat skin conditions.

NEEM OIL FOR MAKING ECZEMA OINTMENT

Neem Tree with flowers

The oil is extracted from from the fruits and seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica). Neem tree is an evergreen tree that grows mainly in the Indian subcontinent. Though the smell of the oil is strong it has a lot of medicinal properties. In India, neem oil is used for skin diseases, inflammation, fevers and as insecticides.

Neem oil is a thick red or green oil. It is not only highly moisturizing but is also naturally antibacterial, anti-inflammatory but can provide external relief from pain and itchiness.

Neem oil is rich in fatty acids, such as palmitic, linoleic, and oleic acids, which help support healthy skin. This oil is, therefore, a very popular ingredient in skin care products in India.

The leaf of the plant also has health benefits. The leaves contain plant compounds called flavonoids and polyphenols, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties.
