DIY Peppermint Lip Balm

Make this DIY cooling peppermint lip balm using essential oils and all natural ingredients for the cold dry winter days. It is so simple to make and very cost efficient too. Scroll down for printable labels at the end of the post.

Come winter, we in Switzerland are hunting for chap sticks to keep our lips moisturized from cracked and dry lips. Good quality all natural chap sticks cost around 6 Swiss Francs. That is a little too steep to dig into our purses. Therefore, I started to make a lot of our skin care to ensure that I have only natural stuff for my family at minimal cost. Because, our skin is the largest organ of our bodies, therefore what we put on it is important. With a little effort you can make your very own cooling peppermint lip balm easily with a minimum of ingredients.

In an earlier post, I shared Lavender Lip Balm recipe with slightly different ingredients. Since, my daughter didn’t like lavender lip balm, I wanted to try a different recipe. I guess, she didn’t like the shea butter and jojoba oil flavors. So, I shifted the ingredients around with this recipe and asked her to choose the flavor. She choose peppermint flavor and she is very happy with this. Now she is carrying it in her pockets, school bag and will give to her friends as gifts too. Well it saves me 6 SFR per tube and I am happy too.

DIY Peppermint Lip Balm

Cocoa Butter – 2 TBS

Coconut Oil – 2 TBS

Bees Wax Pellets – 2 TBS

Peppermint Essential Oil – 15 to 25 drops

Lip Balm Tubes – 12 to 14

HOW TO MAKE PEPPERMINT LIP BALM

  1. Place all ingredients in a small glass bowl. I use a chocolate melting pot because it has a pouring spout. You can use a double boiler if you have one or make one by placing a glass bowl into a pot of boiling water.
  2. Melt all the ingredients and stir often.
  3. Once all the fat has melted, add in 20 to 25 drops of peppermint essential oil.
  4. You can use the pipette to fill the empty lip balm tubes. Since my chocolate pot has a an easy pouring lip, I fill in directly into the empty tubes.
  5. Work swiftly to fill the empty tubes, because beeswax will thicken quickly making it difficult to pour.
  6. Let them harden and use. You can set it in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.

NOTE

If you are planning to use other combination of essential oils feel free to do so. If you are using citrus essential oils, avoid it if you have to go out in the sun. Since, Citrus essential oils are photo sensitive and can cause sun burn.

COCOA BUTTER

Cocoa butter is a light-yellow vegetable fat that comes from cocoa beans and has many uses including making chocolates. Due to the nourishing properties of cocoa butter, it is a popular ingredient in skin creams, lotions, lip balms.

Since, cocoa butter is a decent source of vitamin E, and contains a high amount of fatty acids to keep your skin moisturized therefore, it is popular for treating eczema and dermatitis.

COCONUT OIL

Coconut oil comes from the nut (fruit) of the coconut palm and used widely for cooking in Asia and of late in the west. In addition to cooking with it, coconut oil also has many other uses. Coconut oil contains a certain kind of fat known as medium chain triglycerides which works differently than other types of saturated fat in the body. Therefore, when applied to the skin, coconut oil has a moisturizing effect.

PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL

Peppermint essential oil is highly concentrated and comes from the leaves and flowering parts of the peppermint plant, Mentha x piperita. Essential oils of peppermint can be used topically and in aromatherapy. Since Peppermint has a cooling effect on the skin, this makes it also ideal for dry chapped lips in winter.
