Homemade Hand Cream

Learn how to make this natural, non-toxic ingredients and infused with essential oils. This natural homemade nourishing hand cream moisturises and revitalises tough, dried out hands during the colder months. Moreover, you can make this with very few ingredients and for the fragrance add essential oils of your choice.

During the cold winter months, we usually tend to have dry and cracked hands and skin. Hence, our hands need some extra care during this season. During my youth and childhood, we never really bothered with hand creams. But as I got older and started doing more household chores, my skin got dry with all the washing. Winter is also the time of Vata (Ayurveda), cold and dry, therefore, its normal to have more dry skin during this season.

Our skin is our defensive barrier and when the hands loose their natural moisturising oils it needs to be replenished with a moisturiser.

With fewer oil glands in our hands it’s quite common for the skin to dry out, become rough or even crack. This is why you should choose a hand cream with your skin type in mind. With the right blend of hand cream you can protect your skin and also reduce visible signs of ageing.

HOMEMADE NOURISHING HAND CREAM

I have all the ingredients from making my own cosmetics, so this was an easy project to make. I didn’t need to go shopping for new complicated materials.

For this recipe, I am using a mixture of mango butter and shea butter. However, if you want, you can use just one or the other butters. In the video tutorial, I used mango butter. On the other hand you could also substitute cocoa butter to replace mango or shea butter. Mango butter is on the pricey end, but all the three butters have similar textures and can be replaced in equal parts.

You will also need a carrier oil, a carrier oil makes the hand cream lighter and easier to apply. Jojoba oil is usually an ideal choice because Jojoba oil has a mild scent and penetrates the skin well. It is also great for ultra-sensitive skin. You can use any carrier oil of your choice. I am using sweet almond oil in this recipe.

HOW TO USE MOISTURISING HAND CREAM

Use a small amount of cream on your fingertips and gently massage it into the hands. You can use this hand cream multiple times a day.

For extreme dry hands, apply a generous amount of cream to the hands before bed and put on a pair of gloves. Repeat for several nights until hands are soft and smooth.

Tip

You can use a sugar scrub to remove dead skin cells and restore skin. Use latex free gloves for washing dishes and cleaning.

ESSENTIAL OIL HAND CREAM

Essential oils give a nice scent to your homemade hand cream. In addition to the nice natural fragrance, essential oils have many benefits too.

Several essential oils can improve skin tone, reduce wrinkles, and help with dry skin. Some of my favorite oils for skin are sandalwood, frankincense, and lavender. These essential oils can help clear skin from skin impurities and acne.

WARNING: If you are using citrus essential oils on the face, avoid direct sunlight for 24 hours due to photosensitivity.

BENEFITS OF MANGO BUTTER IN SKIN CARE

Mango butter is rich in antioxidants and has a lot of benefits for the skin, therefore, mango butter is used in many skincare items. It is very moisturising and can help soften the skin and doesn’t clog pores and works well for acne-prone skin. Mango butter is very gentle and can be used on sensitive skin, suitable for all skin types including children. To sum up –

  • Mango butter softens the skin
  • treats dermatitis, psoriasis, sunburn, and eczema
  • moisturises and protects the skin from UV rays
  • prevents premature ageing
  • healing wounds

BENEFITS OF SHEA BUTTER

Shea butter is very moisturising and therefore found in many skin care products. Shea butter is packed with essential nutrients and can enhance your natural complexion and help you glow from the inside out. Raw Shea butter is easy to spread too. There are many benefits for using shea butter in your skin care, below are some of the most important ones.

  • Anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory
  • Promotes cell-regeneration
  • Great for all skin types and esp. sensitive skin
  • Very moisturising
  • Can reduce wrinkles, age spots and scars
  • Hydrate and repair damaged skin
  • Great source of fatty acids and vitamins A and E
  • Antioxidant for your skin to reduce signs of ageing
  • Improves skin tone

Shea butter can be used on almost all skin types.

BENEFITS OF BEES WAX

The other ingredient I am using is bees wax. Beeswax makes the mixture solid and can be added in small amounts to lotions to achieve a suitable texture to homemade cosmetics. You will need to add just very little.

I usually use bees wax for making lip balms and lipsticks, because, bees wax solidify the natural oils in the mixture quickly. It is the most common raw material for ointments .

If you are allergic to bees wax try using a plant based wax.

WHY I USE HOMEMADE HAND CREAM ?

I make make my own hand cream because, commercial hand creams are loaded with chemicals and preservatives. There are a lot of benefits for our skin if we use hand cream regularly.

Since our hands are the most exposed to a lot of water and air throughout the day, they need extra care. During the winter months our hands dry out, chap, and in some cases, crack and bleed. So, applying hand cream can help restore the skin and keep it healthy.

Some of the benefits of using hand cream daily include:

  • Reduces cracking and pigmentation
  • Moisturising
  • Nourishes the skin
  • Reduces signs of ageing
  • Protects our hands against UV exposure
  • Help with brown spots and evens the skin tone
