GardenTour -Planting season April-May 2018
Planting season follows the beginning of spring. My husband has been gardening since the end of winter planning and preparing for the whole planting season. I could shoot the Garden tour video between April and May during the Planting Season. I got round to writing the blog and uploading this long overdue video.
Gardening and my Achilles heel
Gardening is not my forte. That is my husband’s passion. I will try to summarize it as best as I can.
We asked our gardener from last year again to help us in trimming the overgrown bushes and he got a load of enriched soil to be distributed and for filling up the raised beds.
Hazel nut trees were trimmed and some of the other wild ones. We are trying to make a natural fence at the edge of our property by planting yellow willows also called as Osier to give us some privacy.
We are bound by law not to plant bushes on the edge of the street which is not local and native to the area. After much research with the help of the forest department and local nurseries we settled on planting Osiers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willow
Green House
This year we are also building a temporary green house to house our tomatoes and other vegetables like chillies, aubergines and Paprika.
Planting season preparation: Squash and bulbs planted
Zucchini, celery, onion and garlic beds were planted.
We could with the help of a local farmer try to make a bed over a slope by placing a timber and filling it up with the soil. This has become the garlic bed this year.
Composting
We have been composting since last year all our Kitchen wastes and other organic wastes. As a result of deligent composting for the past we could use the compost for enriching the soil this year. This was not enough therefore we ordered a whole load of enriched soil.
We also decided to make an open compost in addition to the quick compost we already have. It was build on the slope and now we have moved the quick compost next to it.
Soil enrichment
We sprayed a whole load of humus mixed with soil because this will enrich the existing soil furthermore our plants will get the maximum nourishment it can get.
Raised beds
We could fill our new raised beds and plant the salads and herbs. My daughter now has her own patch.
We let her plant radish, beetroot, cauliflowers because it was part of her learning and her get wild with the planting without any order.
On the other bed we planted some salads, coriander leaves, chives and basil.
Finally we had still had an excess of soil and humus mix. So I got 2 huge pots from Aldi for Fr.19.90 and we filled it up and planted some flowering plants.
I wanted to make our car park prettier therefore we planted some Lavender, and other pretty flowers.
