Come and see how we converted a huge multi-purpose room to a beautiful office space. Our minimalist home office makeover and organization ticks so many boxes for us now. In addition to being a office space for us, it is also a place of relaxation since we spend more than half of our waking hours here.
Spring cleaning is great because it gives a new perspective to change. Out with the old and in with the new. I didn’t want to spend too much for our minimalist home office makeover. It was all about rearranging the existing furniture to maximize the use of the existing layout. It was all done within a matter of minutes, I got the help of a good friend who is a professional in this field to help me out. Sometimes, a new perspective from a neutral person opens your eyes to something new to break away from your old habits.
CREATING A STYLISH HOME OFFICE
I shared our spring home tour in one of my recent posts, but didn’t share our office room, because it was a work in progress then. The top floor of our home needed a makeover badly, which we got around to finally. My husband and I planned this room for our home office while building this house way back in 2014. Since the space is around 60 sq.m, it has a multi-purpose use. This is my yoga and fitness area. Additionally, it also serves as my daughter’s play area. About 4 years back, I bought a bed sofa from IKEA to use as a guest bed or even for our little naps.
Here are some of my tips to transform your home office with minimum cost for a makeover without breaking you bank balance.
1. DIVIDE THE ROOM TO ZONES TO CREATE FOCUS
Creating different zones helps in making the room look more organized and also encourages the focus of the room. So dividing up the room for designated use helps in creating a well organized space.
You can see the contrast from the above 2 pictures what a difference the makeover has been. We used our existing Ikea Kallax shelves to divide the sitting area from my sewing and creative area. We of course changed the boxes to neutral and uniform organizers. The whole space has become an oasis of relaxation with natural elements. I just added a couple of matching cushions on the sofa but the remaining is the same. I love to take a nap here sometimes. The sofa doubles as a bed sofa for a guest too.
2. USE NEUTRAL ORGANIZERS FOR STORAGE
The above is my office space. Right behind me my husband has his space. These white organizers keeps my desk clutter free and at the same time creates more space visually. We again used a Kallax shelf to the hide the wires peeping out of my husbands’s desk. His desk is a few meters behind my desk. The same area has been transformed, by just moving the furniture around. My office area looks more spacious, we also moved the printer shelf next to the Kallax shelves.
3. USING PEG BOARDS AS ORGANIZERS
Since, we use this room for multi purpose use, we needed a place to store some of the craft supplies and gift wrappers. Therefore, a few years back, I fixed a peg board to make space for this. Below the peg board is my daughter’s creative corner. Since, I wanted the middle space empty, I pushed the home trainer here. My daughter has her own study corner in her room.
4. CREATE CLEVER STORAGE SYSTEMS
An office has a lot of files and paper that needs storage. I know it is in to go paperless. But if you are running a company since sometime it is impossible to do away without papers. Your computer and storage systems can crash. Therefore, we have a filing cabinet to keep our important papers. For additional storage, we have a closed storage system at the back of the room where the wall is taller. This storage also serves as our little library. We store some special reference books for gardening, etc. in it.
5. BRING IN GREENERY
We all know that having house plants is beautiful and at the same time plants brings in natural elements and color to any room. Plus we also know the benefits of house plants in our home. During the winter months, we bring in many of our plants from the garden because they are not winter hardy. This room was slowly becoming a dumping ground for all our plants during the winter months. Nothing against it, but they also needed to be moved around to create beauty in this space. Therefore, I just moved them around. I am really loving this minimalist home office makeover more than ever.
6. DECLUTTERING TO CREATE A MINIMALIST HOME OFFICE
While, we were at our minimalist home office makeover, I was at the same time de-cluttering stuff. We had some play carpets which were tired and worn out. So, I disposed it off. This has created a more minimal and coordinated look. Plus we disposed of the trampoline, table tennis table and some more toys. 7. MINIMALIST LIGHTING
Since the room is huge, we wanted to light with the minimum number of bulbs to save energy. Nothing fancy, as we have a slanting roof, so we choose something which would not hit our head when we stand up. We used only 2 LED ceiling lights on the 2 sides this was plenty enough for the whole room. As you know, LED’s are energy saving and at the same time nowadays they are also economical in terms of cost. Additionally in the sitting area we have a reading light which fits to the ship lap ceiling. I have this reading lamp since almost 8 years. This used to sit in our living room in our previous home, so there was no need to replace this.
8. NEUTRAL TONES TO CREATE FEELING OF SPACE
I prefer the office to be a functional and calming space to work. So we always prefer to use neutral furniture and furnishings here. For the sofa, I have a beige throw which doubles as a day blanket for the short naps. I wanted the whole space to have a clean look and wanted to dust less too. We brought in our Romba robot to clean more often as spring can be dusty with all the pollen drifting around.
