November Garden tour
November Garden and the beginning of winter garden go hand in hand. Temperatures have already dropped to below zero and many of the perennials are settling in for their winter sleep.
After being abroad in a warmer climate for the most of autumn we did really neglect our garden. A friend came in once in a way to harvest some vegetables which would otherwise rot. There is not much to write about, but I will try to summarize as much as I can. If you want to skip this post, you can watch the video. Late October and early November Garden harvest
During our absence for a little more than 3 weeks, our garden did thrive well. The weather didn’t turn for the worse. But the lack of rains was very evident with the low water level in our little stream running through our plot. Our dear friend did come in once a week to check on the garden and the indoor plants as most neighbors were also away on their autumn break.
He could harvest some of the tomatoes, Mexican cucumbers and things which would otherwise rot. He harvested also the remaining of the zucchinis and butternut squash. They were stored away in the cellar for the winter. We were chuffed with the fresh produce from our garden which means fewer trips to the farmers market.
Freezing our Early October produce
Just before we left we tried to steam and flash freeze all the vegetables we could. It was a whole big process the night before our flight. I am happy we could buy a big freezer in summer for this purpose. I can also make my garden produce last a little bit longer. In my late Fall garden update, I mentioned about planting winter vegetables. As a result of which, we are still harvesting some vegetables on a regular basis.
Green House a great investment
If you have the opportunity, its best to invest in a small green house. The success of our garden producing so well is mainly due to this. We could harvest a lot of tomatoes, bell peppers, chilies as a result of this. We plan to make a permanent one next spring. This one broke apart, that towards the end of autumn we couldn’t close it fully anymore. Yet this didn’t affect the vegetables too much. With the warm days and reducing day light the vegetables especially the bell peppers didn’t grow to their maximum potential. We had to harvest mini bell peppers. I stored the green chilies into the freezer.
Winter Vegetables
I mentioned in my fall garden update that we could plant some winter vegetables. In the meantime, the spinach seeds have sprouted and are growing. The winter cauliflowers and winter cabbages can be harvested in spring. They are called winter vegetables is because they are winter sturdy. The lambs lettuce on the other hand, a tasty winter salad can be harvested throughout the winter.

Beauty of late fall in our Garden and the Swiss country side
This is one of the most beautiful seasons visually. With the perennials preparing for the winter sleep, the leaves turn into such a glorious color. You cannot escape this enchanting beauty of nature in the northern hemisphere. I was happy to be back just before all the leaves fell off.
