Small pickings from our Summer garden

Organic Summer garden in July

Our efforts to have a very productive organic summer garden in July is paying off. Since gardening is very much dependent on many factors we are also learning from these mistakes. Moreover, every year is a little different, there is a lot of room for learning for us beginners who want to become self sufficient.

Summer garden in July is when you begin to see the fruits of your labor. I shot a video for our July garden tour just last week for my Youtube channel update.

The reason why I do this Youtube channel is keep a record of our experiences and share it with the world. My filming technique has to improve considerable especially having a steady hand with the camera while walking the uneven garden surfaces.

July and august is when Summer is at its peak in Europe.  This is the best time for harvesting and seeing the plants grow. Also a learning curve for us to implement for next year.

What worked as a beginner’s luck last year didn’t work as well as we would have liked. We couldn’t plant all the plants we wanted. I guess that is what gardening is all about. One has to battle with the weather, soil and seeds.

 July Garden was productive

Summer garden in July was productive so far. I had fewer trips to the store. I only went to the stores  to get milk and fruits.

Quite a few of the vegetables were ready for harvest in July and we harvested Zuchini, peas, potatoes, broccoli, chives and some beans. Tomatoes were just beginning by mid july.

This year we managed to control the Zucchini growth after last year’s experience of saturation. Firstly by planting just a couple of zucchini plants and we just let about 1 or 2 to grow to above normal size. Most of them were harvested early on and were gifted to our friends.

Potato Harvest

We could harvest some of the potatoes. I stored them in the cellar unwashed. They store best unwashed.  These potatoes were planted in autumn.

The variety was Charlotte, a tough variety good for salads, baking and just an allrounder according to my experience. This is one of my favorite variety. A staple in my store cupboard.

My husband made some oven baked french fries for our little daughter who just would eat that all the time if left to her own devices.

Another hot favorite of ours is Rosti. I usually make Rostis, a hot favorite at any Swiss home and a typical Swiss potato prep.
